The interest of companies in understanding and quantifying the environmental impact of their products is growing, with the aim to optimise resource use, reduce costs, and minimise waste,
A
Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a methodology used to evaluate the environmental impacts of a product's entire life cycle, from the purchase of raw materials and manufacturing to use, end-of-life treatment, recycling and final disposal, according to international
ISO 14040 and
ISO 14044 standards.
A LCA study of a product identifies its environmental aspects and quantifies the impacts using various indicators, such as CO₂ emissions per unit of product (e.g. tons, square metres, pieces, etc.).
For businesses, the ability to clearly communicate the environmental impacts of a product or service across its life cycle is becoming increasingly important.
An
Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a certified, voluntary environmental declaration applicable to all products and services. It discloses life cycle impacts of a product in accordance with ISO 14025.
Each
EPD is based on a
Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) study that must be performed in accordance with the specific
Product Category Rules (PCR), which set out the methods for collecting and calculating data, and the rules for reporting environmental impacts.
An EPD allows similar products to be compared, supporting sustainable purchasing choices and optimising production processes. It can enhance corporate identity and It is also a useful business tool for accessing markets and participating in tenders that require specific environmental criteria.
MADE HSE can support companies in the development of LCAs and EPDs, particularly for construction product.
The service covers the full process: from the collection of primary data for LCA modelling according to the sector PCR, to the development of Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs). It also includes support with third-party verification and further registration with the programme operator, i.e. the body that manages and publishes EPDs.
Below is a selection of EPD projects developed by MADE HSE for clients in Italy and other European countries.
These projects have been verified by a third party and published on EPD International:
